This is the 2nd update to the original movie which documents me weaving a giant sunrise from vintage chair webbing for my show at Maitland Regional Gallery - “Lifestyles of The Neither Rich Nor Famous”. This movie, along with update #1, documents the audience in the gallery as they are invited to take a picture of themselves in front of the work to become part of a movie played in the Art Factory and thus part of the exhibition itself. Thank you to all the wonderful people that have taken part, it has been a great process and a privilege to be able to see you engaging with the work. I look forward to seeing the end product!
This movie is the first extension to the original movie which shows me weaving a giant sunrise from vintage chair webbing. This update carries on the process by documenting the visitors to my exhibition at Maitland Regional Gallery in Dec 2011. I asked the audience to become involved by taking a picture of themselves in front of the work and this is the result. A heart felt thank you to all involved, I love these people!
2 more instalments to follow, stay tuned…
Solo exhibition, The Art Factory, Maitland Regional Art Gallery
11th Nov 2011 - 19th Feb 2012,
Opening celebration 10th Dec, 3 - 5pm. Luminous picture postcard holiday memories are woven out of colourful vintage chair webbing.
The Art Factory consists of a traditional gallery space upstairs and a special space dedicated to children downstairs. Downstairs children get to interact one on one with the ideas and processes used by the artist upstairs. As part of the downstairs experience I have created a movie projection documenting the creation of the central piece upstairs, a giant 6m w x 2 m h sunrise woven out of vintage chair webbing. The audience is encouraged to take their own photo in front of the work, (using the camera provided) so they become special guests in the movie which I will update throughout the show. Have a look at the NEWS opage of this website to see the movie updaytes of the visitors to the show.
This show coincides with my 3rd consecutive representation at Sculpture By The Sea in which I am using the same material; vintage polypropylene chair webbing.
Check out the making of “There’s Never Been a Better Time”. This is the 6m wide by 2 m high weaving of a sunrise from vintage chair webbing that will be installed at Maitland Regional Gallery from Nov 12th 2011 until Feb 19th 2012.
Come to the show and become part of this movie that will be projected downstairs in the kids interactive space, along with hands on “play weaves” for the children to do themselves.
For this work I have revived 5 existing benches around the Bondi - Tamarama walk by adorning them with colourful, vintage polypropylene chair webbing, a la beach chairs and folding aluminium chairs of lesiure. They become a reminder to stop, slow down and ponder how things have changed, and what may have stayed the same.
Installed Nov 3rd - Nov 20, 2011, Bondi.
The last 2 days, Oct 31st and Nov 1st, have been spent arduously installing Sea Change for Sculpture By The Sea 2011. It was a very long slog. However, the work, which consists of 5 existing benches woven with colourful vintage chair webbing, looks fantastic and the response has been incredible, so it was all worth it. I am extremely grateful to all my helpers particularly my mum (child care), dad (engineering and power tools), husband (all rounder) and sister Karina (weaving). They are located near the beginning of the walk at the Bondi end so come down and take a look, it’s going to be a great show this year! (final images still to come)
Sunny days, sandy hair, the sea breeze and smell of sunscreen, watermelon in terry toweling jumpsuits… For this ongoing body of work I have taken the classic folding aluminium, webbed chair from the 1950s and revived it for our modern lives, bringing back to life and into our lounge rooms all that it has come to represent.
Each abstract design is carefully woven from colourful vintage chair webbing over wooden frames, reinterpreting a design classic for today. Available for purchase or commission.
